Request a Shade Tree
Medford funds planting and first two years of maintenance for hundreds of shade trees along city streets every year.
Do you want a free tree in front of your apartment or home? Write or phone Medford’s tree warden, Aggie Tuden, who will work with you to select an appropriate variety for the planting site.
Medford’s “Back of the Sidewalk” Tree Planting Program
Sometimes planting a shade tree along a city tree may not be possible due to overhead wires or lack of space. Under Massachusetts General Law Title XIV, Chapter 87, Section 7, Medford initiated the “back of the sidewalk” program. This program permits city-funded trees to be planted on private property — as long as the tree is sited within twenty feet of a sidewalk and as long as the homeowner provides written consent.
Trees planted “back of the sidewalk” generally have more favorable growing conditions and have less stress than typical sidewalk-planted trees.
Consider taking advantage of the “back of the sidewalk” program. Write or phone Medford’s tree warden, Aggie Tuden, who will work with you to select an appropriate variety for the planting site.
